Running vs. Cycling & Burning Calories

SHARE: Share

Yesterday I started my 2nd month of training. I pay attention to what, when and how much I eat and I am going to the gym almost daily. Four days a week I am doing bodybuilding exercises plus cardio. When I am not doing strength exercises I do only cardio, mostly biking and running. Resting is also important so I try to respect my resting hours.

As I mentioned before, I like to run and ride the bike. I was curious to find out which of these two burns more calories. The strange thing is that some guys say that what really matters is the distance and it doesn’t really matter if we are running or riding the bike.

Others say that running requires the same amount of energy to run 1 mile, at any speed and we burn ~100 calories/mile while bike riding is affected by wind resistance (if you ride outside the gym), so the faster we ride, the more energy we use, and the more calories we burn.

In the end, I decided to bet on bike riding because there is far less stress on my hip joints and knee, and the harder I push myself the greater the reward in calories burned. So, I will ride the bike 30 minutes and run 10. I suppose it is the best for now. I will have to reduce this soon because I don’t want to lose muscle mass.

Running outside is cool, same applies for cycling. I don`t like to do these in the gym, it is boring.
